Over 150 Bethpage Students Participate in Annual Bethpage Water District Poster Contest

Bethpage, N.Y. – The Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners William J. Ellinger, John R. Sullivan and Gary S. Bretton are thrilled by the overwhelming interest from the Bethpage School District and its students to participate in the first annual BWD Poster Contest Bethpage Protects, Bethpage Conserves. Over 150 students submitted posters of their own design to answer the question, “How Can I Conserve and Protect My Water?”  The contest was designed to encourage community participation and education in regards to their water supply with the launch of this year’s poster contest.

“It is imperative our neighbors are involved in and educated about one of our most important natural resources,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman William J. Ellinger.  “We look forward to the poster contest becoming a tradition within the Bethpage community and opportunity for the district to expand upon water education in the schools.”

This year’s poster contest put students to the test, challenging them to think of ways they can improve the community’s water supply for the future. Commissioners Ellinger, Sullivan and Bretton are judging each poster to select the top three submissions per grade that creatively, visually and accurately convey the best message.

“Although we only just begun the judging process, it is already clear how creative and intelligent the students are,” said Board of Commissioners Secretary Gary S. Bretton. “Despite their young age, the students have displayed a significant amount of knowledge concerning our water supply and an ability to learn more.”

“We are incredibly grateful for the Bethpage School District for recognizing how important lessons of water conservation and protection are, even to young students,” said Board of Commissioners treasurer John R. Sullivan. “We are always encouraging students and young professionals to get involved with their water supply, and this contest provides the perfect opportunity to encourage future water engineers and plant operators.”

The winners will be honored by the District and posters will then be displayed in the Bethpage Public Library for community viewing.
